The aim of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of emotion regulation training and self-compassion training on the emotional control of undergraduate psychology students. This was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test-post-test design with a control group. The statistical population of this study included all undergraduate psychology students at Islamic Azad University, Tabriz Branch in the academic year 1403-1404. Among them, 60 people were selected using a purposive non-random sampling method and randomly divided into three groups (20 people in each group). Members of the emotion regulation training and self-compassion training groups received their specific intervention in 8 1.5-hour sessions, and the control group did not receive any treatment. All three groups answered the Williams et al. (1997) Emotional Control Questionnaire before and after the intervention. Data analysis was performed using multivariate analysis of covariance and SPSS-24 software. The results showed that emotion regulation training and self-compassion training increased students' emotional control compared to the control group (P<0.001). Furthermore, the effect of emotion regulation training on emotion control was greater than that of self-compassion training (P<0.001). Based on the findings of this study, it can be concluded that both emotion regulation training and self-compassion training increase students' emotional control. However, this effectiveness is greater in emotion regulation training. Therefore, it is suggested that emotion regulation training be used to increase emotional control.
